Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Modalities Comparison Chart

This chart shows which modalities are most beneficial when treating a diagnosed disorder.

Biofeedback is a process for providing feedback of an individual’s physiological activity via bio-medical instrumentation, and other educational information, to enable the individual to learn to regulate his or her own physiology.  The BCIA certification program in biofeedback includes the peripheral modalities of Surface Electromyographical (SEMG) which measures the stress in a muscle, Temperature training, Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) which measures sweat on the skin, respiration training, and an introduction to Heart Rate Variability (HRV).  There is a separate certification specifically for HRV.

Neurofeedback, often referred to as EEG biofeedback or brain wave training, is a type of biofeedback in which individuals are trained to control and optimize their brain function. Neurofeedback may or may not include the use of a direct stimulus or task when teaching the brain new ways of performing. The BCIA certification in neurofeedback is specific to this type of training.

The Pelvic Muscle Dysfunction Biofeedback program focuses on the use of SEMG by licensed medical professionals to specifically treat elimination disorders and chronic pelvic pain.
