Requirements

To qualify for Technician Certification by Prior Experience (CPE) in biofeedback, you must be employed by an appropriately licensed, BCIA certified professional who is legally responsible for your work with a patient or client, and meet or exceed all the requirements below.

1.  Human anatomy, human physiology, or human biology course 

A comprehensive course in human anatomy, human physiology, or human biology course covering the organization of the human body and all 11 systems, taken from a regionally accredited academic institution or BCIA approved course is required. Candidates should complete a course that best supports their biofeedback practice.

2.  Didactic Training

You have learned the theory and practice of biofeedback through one or a combination of the criteria below:

  • 42-hours of Blueprint-specific didactic training in biofeedback through workshops or seminars (the equivalent of a basic Blueprint-specific didactic course for traditional biofeedback certification)

  • a minimum of 16 hours of formal one-one-one professional didactic training with an outside instructor who meets qualifications as a BCIA-approved mentor or accredited training provider in a formalized workshop format with Blueprint-specific learning objectives.

  • on-the-job training, including a minimum of 16 hours of direct one-on-one instruction with a BCIA-approved mentor, which includes education in Blueprint-specific objectives and practical biofeedback applications.

3. Mentoring for Skill Development

You have spent at least 25 hours of contact time with a BCIA-approved mentor to develop your biofeedback skills focusing on any of the following:

  • initial case consultation/protocol selection
  • reviewing client progress
  • ongoing case management
  • proper use of protocols
  • reviewing past cases
  • instrumentation and sensor placement skills

4.  Experience with Clients/Patients

You have a minimum of 3,000 hours of direct, one-on-one experience using biofeedback with clients/patients over at least 5 years. It is required that the majority of this work be done within the past 10 years.  You must provide a written document of this work.  This is called a Statement of Practical Experience.

5.  Letters of Verification

Submit at least three letters from neurofeedback professionals who have read and can verify your statement. One letter needs to come from your current supervisor, and it is strongly recommended that at least one letter should be from a BCIA certificant. Letters must be current and received by BCIA directly, either hard copy or email format.

6.  Validation Exam

**YOU MUST HAVE A VALID APPLICATION ON FILE BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THE EXAM!**

Upon approval of your application, you will have 1 year to complete the certification exam.  There is no set pass score.  We are using your expertise to validate current and new exam items.  All exams must be completed using our online proctoring service. Use the Exam Registration Form to register for the exam. Fees

Fees include $150 filing fee which must be paid at the time the application is submitted plus the $100 certification fee for a total of $250.  **APPLICATION FOR EXAM AND ALL FEES MUST BE PAID AT LEAST 1 WEEK PRIOR TO PREFERRED EXAM DATE**

All fees are non-refundable and must be in US funds only and paid by check, money order, or credit card.  

Once your application has been submitted and approved, you may make plans for the written certification exam.

Requirements may be met in any order and do not have to be completed prior to the exam.

Where do I start?

Candidates must file an application and pay all fees prior to considering the exam. The signature area includes your agreement to abide by the BCIA Professional Standards and Ethical Principles of Biofeedback and follow the appropriate rules and regulations of your supervisor's profession and state.  

To be accepted, applications must include: the signature, proof of your supervisor's current license to practice in a health care field in accordance with BCIA standards, and payment of the filing fee.
