NF Mentoring Webinar - Yea Buts in QEEG

Presented by: Dr. Ron Swatzyna

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) have been with us for almost 100 years. Quantitative EEGs (qEEGs) have been with us for 50 years. Although their potential for unlocking the mysteries of the brain, EEG and qEEG both been underutilized in neurology and psychiatry. EEGs were invented by a psychiatrist (Hans Berger) and shortly “stolen” by neurology. QEEG was created to help unravel the mysteries of EEG. However, qEEG became separated from both neurology and psychiatry (except for the epileptologist) and considered by both, as lacking validity. Two case studies will be presented from intake, through testing and treatment selection, decision-making throughout the treatment plan and what was learned about why a QEEG may or may not be the only information to consider. This presentation addresses the blessings and the curses of qEEG. By understanding qEEG limitations, I believe we can mend the divide between neurology, psychiatry, and neuromodulation.
