Webinar 2026-04: Protect Heart Rate Variability Through Lifestyle Changes

Presented by: Dr. Fred Shaffer, BCB-P, BCB-HRV-P

A. Description of Program: This professional webinar reframes heart rate variability as a metric to be protected rather than maximized, given the genetic and age-related ceilings that bound autonomic capacity, with heritability accounting for roughly half of HRV variance and demographic factors explaining only 15 percent of RMSSD differences across populations. Dr. Shaffer argues that HRV biofeedback reliably improves anxiety, depression, pain, and performance even when morning RMSSD does not rise, then surveys modifiable factors in order of evidence strength, from physical activity, weight loss, sleep, blood pressure control, and stress management to hydration, sedentary-behavior interruption, compassion training, green space exposure, and social connection, with mechanistic detail spanning sinoatrial node aging, baroreflex desensitization, central autonomic network thinning, and adipose-driven sympathetic activation. The session closes by explaining how to separate signal from noise, warning against the iatrogenic effects of HRV optimization, and offering a practical takeaway: maintain healthy habits, interpret HRV against the individual's own baseline, and use deviations to detect poor sleep, fatigue, illness, or stress rather than to chase population norms.
